One year ago today, on August 5, 2023, Mr. Romil Patel and his family took a bold step by taking over from Lloyds and opening the Ash Vale Pharmacy and Travel Clinic. This transition marked the beginning of a new chapter, filled with enthusiasm and commitment to better serving our community. From day one, the new owners received high praise and have continuously introduced new services, such as the PHARMACY FIRST service, which aims to prioritize patient care.
Invitation to Share Your Feedback
To celebrate our first anniversary, we are inviting residents to share their feedback with us during this anniversary week. Mr. Patel is eager to understand your needs and challenges, particularly concerning healthcare, and explore new ways we can be of assistance. In appreciation, we will be giving out goodies, chocolates, and sweets as a token of our gratitude.
Reflections on Our First Year
Mr. Romil Patel and Mrs. Swati Patel reflect on their journey:
“On August 4, 2023, we officially took over the pharmacy from Lloyds and undertook its rebranding as Ash Vale Pharmacy and Travel Clinic. This marked a significant milestone as we transitioned the business and began implementing our vision for its future,” said Mrs. Swati Patel.
Our Family and Our Vision
We are a family of four, with two young boys, Arjun Patel and Shivansh Patel. A year ago, we decided to expand our family by purchasing the pharmacy. As Romil often says, the pharmacy is his third baby. When we bought this business, we were aware of its poor state and lackluster online presence. We worried about what we would do if we couldn’t turn it around, especially from the patients’ perspective. However, Romil observed that many patients were not receiving the timely help they needed, which motivated us even more.
We approached this endeavour with a determination to provide high-quality patient care services, firmly believing in the principle of karma: by doing good for others, we trust that good will come back to us.
Our Commitment and Hard Work
Mr. Romil Patel shared, “My wife and I worked tirelessly throughout the year to provide high-quality patient care advice. Since we started, both of us have been working six days a week. I work full-time at the pharmacy from Monday to Saturday, while my wife does her own job from Monday to Thursday and joins me at the pharmacy on Fridays and Saturdays to help with our business. We have spent over 12 hours a day at the pharmacy to bring it up to date and provide excellent customer service.”
A Heartfelt Thank You!
We are now proud to say that we feel settled, and the pharmacy operations run smoothly. On this occasion, I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to the locals for accepting us and helping us to settle down.
We would also like to express our gratitude to the staff at Bartlett Group Practice on our annual anniversary. Thank you for consistently sending prescriptions daily, enabling us to deliver medication to our patients. Your assistance and coordination have been crucial in achieving the high level of patient satisfaction we have reached. Many thanks to the practice manager, reception staff, and the dispensary team of Ash Vale Medical Centre.
Looking Ahead
As we celebrate this significant milestone, we are excited about the future and remain committed to serving our community with the same passion and dedication. Your feedback during this anniversary week will help us better understand how we can continue to improve and meet your healthcare needs.
Thank you for being part of our journey. Here’s to many more years of health, wellness, and community at Ash Vale Pharmacy and Travel Clinic!
Mr Romil Patel has announced the launch of the new Pharmacy First service in Ash Vale. The Pharmacy First service was created to enable Community Pharmacists to supply prescription-only medicines, including antibiotics and antivirals where clinically appropriate, to treat seven common health conditions without the need to visit a GP. There is no additional cost to this Pharmacy First service at the Ash Vale Pharmacy and Travel Clinic, all treatments and prescriptions that are NHS-funded are now accessible, but without additional consultation with your GP.
Anyone can just walk into the pharmacy, and As a Pharmacist I will assess them and can also prescribe the antibiotics if needed in our private consultation room. My aim is to help mitigate long wait times at our local GP by reducing their work and helping residents directly at our Pharmacy. You can also book a Pharmacy Services appointment online by visiting ashvalepharmacy.uk/book-an-appointment, phone 01252 330377 or see me in-store. Monday to Friday 0900-18:30 & Saturday 09:00 – 17:30. The Pharmacy is located on Wharf Rd, Ash Vale, Aldershot GU12 5AZ.
Pharmacy First targeted conditions
The seven common conditions, now treatable without the need to visit your GP are:
Usual prescription charges will apply for the seven common conditions. Patients who were already exempt from prescription charges will still be exempt.
Whilst UK government’s Pharmacy First service is to be made available nationally, it is up to each individual pharmacy to launch and promote their service, which aims to enable community pharmacies to supply some prescription-only medication, where clinically appropriate, without the need for a GP appointment and a prescription.
In a statement Community Pharmacy England said:
The Pharmacy First service, which will commence on 31st January 2024 (subject to the required IT systems being in place), is a crucial first step in recognising and properly funding the enormous amount of healthcare advice that community pharmacies provide to the public every day and in establishing and funding community pharmacy as the first port of call for healthcare advice.
The service will also incorporate the existing elements of the Community Pharmacist Consultation Service, i.e. minor illness consultations with a pharmacist and the supply of urgent medicines (and appliances), both following a referral from NHS 111, general practices* and other authorised healthcare providers (i.e. patients are not able to present to the pharmacy without a referral).
*General practices cannot refer patients for Supply of urgent medicines (and appliances).
In the clinical pathway consultations with a pharmacist, people with symptoms suggestive of the seven conditions will be provided with advice and will be supplied, where clinically necessary, with a prescription-only treatment under a Patient Group Direction (PGD) or in one pathway, an over-the-counter medicine (supplied under a clinical protocol), all at NHS expense.
In the future, we hope that independent prescribers will be able to use their skills to complete episodes of care within the service, without the need for a PGD. However, for the time being, all pharmacists providing the service must use the PGDs and clinical protocol.
It’s been over 6 months since Ash Vale Pharmacy re-opened under new management and continues to receive high praise from its customers. Compared to the (previous company), which received local complaints from both its customers and the local Council, now the situation could not be more different. The Pharmacy is independently operated by its new owner, Romil Patel & his team and has impressed local residents and has put an end to excessive queuing, lack of stock and poor customer service.
Ash Parish News asked Romil Patel to describe the Ash Vale Pharmacy:
We are community-focused and as a team, and decided to put the patients to the fore and we now offer the best service possible. In addition to dispensing, we have a range of stock based on our customers’ feedback. Investing heavily in staff training we aim to ensure we have the right people available when our customers need them. Our team care deeply about our patients’ safety, which is why we will deliver free of charge to our customers if they are over 70, vulnerable or disabled. The Pharmacy also offers walk-in vaccinations so there is no need to book and we have a private consultation room where we also operate our travel clinic.
Local residents give high praise for Ash Vale Pharmacy
Ash Parish News asked local residents to give their view on the new service and this is a small sample of the praise they gave:
