About Typhoid

Typhoid fever is a highly contagious bacterial infection with the potential to spread throughout the body, affecting various organs and causing severe complications that, if not promptly treated, can be fatal. The culprit behind typhoid fever is the bacterium Salmonella typhi, closely related to the bacteria responsible for salmonella food poisoning.

This infectious disease is most prevalent in regions with inadequate sanitation and limited access to clean water. The primary mode of transmission is through the consumption of food or drink contaminated with a small quantity of infected feces or urine.

Typhoid fever is commonly contracted during visits to countries with poor sanitation, such as Bangladesh, India, and Pakistan. Travel to Asia, Africa, or South America also poses a risk of infection. While typhoid fever is uncommon in the UK, children face a higher risk due to their underdeveloped immune systems. Notably, their symptoms are typically milder compared to those in adults.

Symptoms

The main symptoms of typhoid fever are:

  • High temperature that can reach 39-40C
  • Headache
  • General aches and pains
  • Cough
  • Constipation

It is important to treat typhoid fever quickly as symptoms will continue to worsen, could cause complications and increase the risk of developing potentially fatal complications

Prevention

Vaccination is recommended if you are planning to travel to parts of the world where typhoid fever is widespread. The vaccination does not provide 100% protection so it is important to take precautions when travelling:-
